The Magic of Lechosa

Papaya or Lechosa, as it is known in the Dominican Republic, is a tropical fruit from Central America and the Caribbean. 



The lechosa is a super delicious and very healthy fruit. It’s loaded with antioxidants that can reduce inflammation, fight disease and help keep you looking young.


It’s fairly easy to select a good lechosa. To know if it’s ripe, choose on that has yellow/orange skin. You can also buy a green lechosa and this will ripen in a few days if left on your kitchen counter. 

The lechosa milkshake (batida de lechosa) is a very popular drink in the Dominican Republic, where the fruit is found in literally every market and vendor’s cart.


HOW TO MAKE LECHOSA MILKSHAKE?

To prepare this delicious lechosa smoothie recipe, you want to peel the lechosa and remove the seeds. Cut into cubes. Add the lechosa, milk, sugar, vanilla, a pinch of cinnamon and ice into a blender. Mix all until smooth.

Ingredients


  • 3 cups fresh lechosa, peeled and cubed

  • 1 12 oz. can carnation milk

  • 4 tablespoons sugar, plus more if needed

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1-2 cups ice



Instructions


  • Place all ingredients in a blender and mix on high speed until the ice is well blended. Add more sugar if desired and blend for an additional 30 seconds.

  • Serve immediately.
